Licensing - The PPL and The Pro-Dub
Summary: You do NOT need a Pro Dub licence to use music from FitMixPro.com. You DO need to be covered by a PPL licence if you are in the UK.
Fitness Centres are now responsible for obtaining coverage for all classes in their venue, not the individual instructor. Instructors only need individual PPL licences if they teach anywhere other than Fitness Centres.
What is the PPL? The PPL is a company that represents the record companies (e.g. Sony, Universal) in the UK. The idea is that if you are using their music to make money, then you should pay more for it than someone who buys it just to listen to privately. So the PPL collects licence royalties from people who use music professionally, and then distributes it to the performers. FitMixPro.com is an official agent of PPL UK Ltd.
Do I need to buy my own licence? If you only teach in a Fitness Centre, then no - the Centre must buy a licence to cover the classes you teach there. If you teach anywhere else, then you DO need to buy a licence - the cost will depend on the number of classes you teach. If you need a licence you can download the official application form here and send it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Where can I find out more? Visit the PPL site for Exercise to Music, and they can be contacted directly on 020 7534 1456, or if it's something we can help with email us at email@example.com.
What is a Pro-Dub licence? The PPL licence allows you to play music in public. The Pro-Dub licence allows you to make a copy of that music. For example, a 'copy' would include burning a CD from a download, or copying a download to an MP3 player. Obviously any copy made can still only be used by the person who bought the music.
So why don't I need a Pro Dub for music from FitMixPro? Because we have a special agreement with the Pro-Dub scheme - whenever a track is purchased from us, we pay an extra fee so that our customers automatically have the right to transfer their download to an MP3 player and burn it to CD. See these official FAQS on the PRS site, Section 3.
